Keys To Discipleship

Published on: 6/13/2023

As a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are all his disciples or his sheep.

No matter what I post or what other content says, everything else should add or flow into these things.

Here are the keys to discipleship:

  1. Personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ

  2. Trying to be set apart (not carnal)

  3. Trying to keep the commandments

  4. Repenting of sins and having a prayer life (+ Fasting)

  5. Seeking wisdom and knowledge

  6. Trying to walk the straight and narrow

  7. Seeking God’s kingdom (or God’s will)

1. Personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ

This is priority number one. Everything else follows this one.

It is through our relationship with Lord Jesus Christ that we are united with God.

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:16-19
Ephesians 3:16-19

And Lord Jesus Christ should be our head:

Colossians 1:18-20
Colossians 1:18-20

2. Trying to be set apart (not carnal)

“Born again” or having (and maintaining) a spiritual mind through the Holy Spirit and following Christ.

John 15:26-27
John 15:26-27
Colossians 3:1-4
Colossians 3:1-4
Colossians 3:1-4
Colossians 3:1-4

3. Trying to keep the commandments

Are we going to be perfect ? not likely.

Can we strive to be ? yes.

Matthew 22:37-40
Matthew 22:37-40

4. Repenting of sins and having a prayer life (+ Fasting)

Repenting of our sins and praying daily.

James 5:16
James 5:16

We can even add in fasting from time to time to help our spiritual growth:

Matthew 17:21
Matthew 17:21

5. Seeking wisdom and knowledge

Upgrade our wisdom & knowledge to be able to understand truth in the word, and to apply it in our lives.

Proverbs 4:7-9
Proverbs 4:7-9
Proverbs 9:10
Proverbs 9:10

Even desire for such a gift, and ask God for wisdom and knowledge:

2 Chronicles 1:11-12
2 Chronicles 1:11-12

6. Trying to walk the straight and narrow

The Holy Spirit we receive through accepting Christ guides us on that path.

John 14:5-6
John 14:5-6
Matthew 7:13-14
Matthew 7:13-14

7. Seeking God’s kingdom (or God’s will)

This is a verse where Jesus Christ himself tells us how to pray, it emphasized doing God’s will.

It must be quite important, no ?

Matthew 6:9-13
Matthew 6:9-13
Matthew 6:33
Matthew 6:33
Matthew 12:48-50
Matthew 12:48-50

Will we be perfect in these things ? Not Likely.

Everything will be a work in progress for all of us, and that is why we need to rely on our Lord Jesus Christ.
